Gallery 88 exposes Florida roadside art of the 1950s
Gallery 88 has earned a reputation for exposing esoteric finds. Its latest dig is a sample of paintings by a troupe that dubbed itself "The Florida Highwaymen" during the 1950s. The show runs through Feb. 22.This group of African-American painters canvassed the roads of South Florida, mainly the Fort Pierce area, catering to the burgeoning migration of snowbirds. Literally on the side of the road, the self-taught collective churned out thousands of postcard Florida landscapes and sold them to passersby, sometimes before they had time to dry.John Jarvis, one of the original architects of the University of West Florida (recall the original square "huts" that dot the campus), saw one of the Highwaymen paintings hanging in building 12. He talked about it with Gallery 88 Director Lynne Marshall, and got the ball rolling for the show. The paintings here are indicative of the group's prolific output. More>>

Endorsing Ron Paul, and Why Progressive Dems Should Support Ron Paul
Maybe, expecting and anticipating it, he'll have a ready response... after all, as a doctor, he's had to be ready for emergencies all his life. Even if Paul does not win, another thing he's doing for Progressives is helping a hell of a lot of Republicans to start thinking differently about politics. It's hard to imagine most of the Ron Paul supporters going back to someone like Rudy Giuliani or Mitt Romney, or Mike Huckabee or John McCain, who are all so corporation owned, directed and inspired. The "paulparazzi" are all being primed to vote for a more progressive candidate. If Paul does not win the Republican candidacy, then I expect a huge portion of Republican and independent Paul supporters will move to support the Democratic candidate, as long as it is not Hillary. I think anti-hillary reflexes will prevent support for Senator Clinton. More>>

Sherlock Holmes yarn is yawn at Play House
Such modern age sophisticated sleuthing owes a huge debt to Sherlock Holmes, the iconic fictional detective created by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, who in turn was inspired by Charles Dickens and Edgar Allan Poe.Award-winning playwright Steven Dietz jumps on the bandwagon with "Sherlock Holmes: The Final Adventure." It's at The Cleveland Play House through Nov. 4.I have never read any of Doyle's 56 stories or four novellas about Sherlock Holmes, nor can I recall any of the Sherlock Holmes films starring Basil Rathbone as the forensics genius and Nigel Bruce as his longsuffering sidekick Doctor Watson. .
